John Virtue

John Virtue was born in Lancashire in 1947. He is known for his monochrome works that explore the landscape in a manner that blurs the boundaries between abstraction and figuration.  Virtue studied at the Slade School of Art, London, working briefly as a postman before dedicating himself to his art in the 1980s. Since then Virtue has exhibited widely throughout the UK, USA and Asia. His work is included in a number of important collections including the British Museum, the Tate Britain, the Victoria and Albert, the Yale Centre for British Art and the Walker Art Centre. He held the prestigious position of Associate artist at the National Gallery, London, from 2003 - 2005.
